Nigerian music act, N.S.U.K
rave of the moment, a multi-talented individual and arguably the best dancer in
Niger State. Adam Junior Oteikwu popularly known as AdamSwag, is no doubt an upcoming name and voice to reckon with in the Nigerian music industry. In this exclusive interview
with Sapilo Prince Rukky and
Divinelove Udorji, AdamSwag opens up on the qualities he looks out for in a
woman. He also speaks on his career, his relationship status, education, his
most terrible experience as a performer and how his childhood was.
Tell us about yourself and how growing up was for you?
My name is Adam Junior Oteikwu,
popularly known as AdamSwag, am from the Idoma speaking part of Benue State. I
was born on the 24th of August 1991 in Minna Niger State. Am a 300 level
student of Geography department, Nasarawa State University, keffi. I grew up in
the Police Barrack and that's why till date am still referred to as a barrack
boy. Growing up was very rough for me because I was living around hoodlums who
were in my neighborhood and I had so many of them as friends. Nevertheless
growing up was also fun for me, as I was born in the midst of ladies and my sisters
never ceased to shower me with so much love. At home my family call me Junior
but due to my love for fancy and trendy wears, my friends added the word "swag"
to my name and that was how the name AdamSwag came about. My logo F.B.I stands
for "Full Blooded Idoma boy".
At what age did you discover you had talents for
dancing and singing?
I discovered I had talent for
dancing at a very tender age, then I never knew what it really was but I just
knew there was something unique and different embedded in me. Initially it was
football, people would gather round to watch me play football and to them they
felt I was dancing rather than playing football. Back then in primary school I
went for a birthday party, while I was dancing subconsciously people started
shouting and screaming, but at home I dance like that and my siblings would
just see it as a normal thing. So as time went on I started developing and
working more on myself.
How do you combine classes and shows, doesn't these
shows affect your reading time table?
Yes! Partially it does, but I
try as much as possible to create time for everything. I create time for my
shows and also create time for my personal reading time table. And I try as much
as possible not miss my classes and I don't joke with my lecture classes because
I understand more when am in class. So what I do is, before I go for any show I
make sure I read my book because I know after the show I would be exhausted.
The only time I get to play is when am at shows, when am at home I don't play.
The only thing I do when am at home is read my books and watch movies. At this
point handling shows and classes doesn't really affect me that much because am
used to it, but frankly speaking it’s not easy combining classes and shows, it’s
a bit difficult but you just have to be smart and focused.
You are one of the best dressed entertainer in N.S.U.K,
what inspires your dress sense?
Sometimes that's the same
question I ask myself. The thing is, I like looking good. And my mom is a
fashion designer who is popularly known as Mama Ada, infact my family as a
whole are all fashion freaks. I learnt
fashion designing from my mom, so sometimes she designs my cloths and I also
design my cloths to. But one thing that inspires me to wear good cloth is the
environment I come from and the kind of people I see around me. I also draw
inspiration from the big names and superstars we have in the entertainment
industry, people like Banky W, 2face, ice prince and Wizkid, these are artiste that always
look good and to be a superstar you have to always look good so as to give your
fans a better impression about you, obviously as the saying goes "people
address you the way you are dressed". Looking good is one thing I feel is
a must for every artiste.
With your huge fame, how do u manage your female fans?
Managing my female fans is
one of the most difficult thing and the biggest problem am having right now.
One thing about female fans is, some of them want your whole attention and it
cannot be done that way. Having ladies as you fan is cool, as they would always
remain your number one fan and would always be the one cheering you up when you
are on stage. But once they need your
time and you tell them you are busy or they like you and you don't reciprocate,
they begin to act funny and start saying crazy things about you. When girls
start saying crazy things about you, mehn! Its not going to be funny.
Nevertheless they would always remain my best fans. What I do is to set boundaries
between myself and my female fans.
What's your most terrible experience as a performer?
I can't really remember but
there was this performance I had were I fell off the stage that was in F.U.T
Minna. I went for a show and it happened to be one of their biggest award
night. At a point when I was performing the whole fans were overjoyed, so when
my second song came in, which been a song that carries so much energy and involves
more of dancing, I was moving backwards towards the wrong direction not knowing
that the stage was separated with speakers, mistakenly I slipped and fell, instead
of booing and laughing at me, the fans became more excited, infact it was the
female fans that came to pick me up and I was taken backstage. Deep down myself
I was thinking I had messed up but the female fans on the other hands were
saying it was their best performance, cos a guy from another school came to
kill the show and according to the fans that the organizers of the show became
angry and had to set a plot by keeping a speaker somewhere that would make me
fall. So they were thinking it was a planned stuff, they never knew the mistake
came from me.
When next are we expecting another single from you or
when are you dropping your album?
For now am not thinking of
dropping an album cos am in school but certainly good songs must always fall
out. I have a new single which has not been released officially but it has been
aired on some radio stations, its titled "ROLL". This new single
"ROLL", is a very crazy song. Am also currently working on the remix
of "OK" with one Nigerian amazing and popular artiste. So the fans
should also look out for that to. Hopefully January 2016 would be the bomb cos
I would be dropping two hits.
What are the qualities you look out for in a woman?
I like calm and reserve
girls, girls that are not loud. Must be a good cook, know how to make-up and
should know how to dress. Even if people don't see her been beautiful I would
see her as the most beautiful girl in the world.
Do you have a girlfriend??
SURE I DO!!!!! I shouldn't
use the word girlfriend, I have a wife because she is more than a girlfriend to
me. I can't stay a day without seeing my wife, I know we are not yet married
but that is the title I accord her cos she is a girl I want to get married to.
Her name is a bit long, the abbreviated word I use in calling her is "KOKO
(everything)" because she is everything I want in a woman and I love her
so much. She knows I have female friends and she encourages to have female
friends cos she knows am not the kind of guy that flirts around and she feels
having female friends makes a guy free. There is no day I don't see her, any
day I don't see her that's probably because she is not around. She is somebody
I like seeing always and I don't get tired of seeing her.
Where do u see yourself in the nearest future?
By God's grace in few years I
see myself where Wizkid and Davido are. Currently my songs are been played in
Nigeria's popular radio stations. I think that's a good starting point for me.
So many people feel because my name is everywhere it therefore means Adamswag
"don hammer" and that's not really true. Sincerely speaking the money
has not arrived yet, but I know it would soon come. In the nearest future I see
myself receiving international awards and been recognized worldwide because I
would be creating what has not been created before cos am not just a singer am
also a dancer.
What message do u have for your fans and other
upcoming artiste like you?
One word I have for my fans
and other up-coming artiste like me is, once you are destined for something put
your mind into it, but once you realize it’s not working out for you, then quit
or you might end up spending a lot and wasting too much of your time and yet
not get appreciated or even recognized because you are not really giving your
audience what they want. The truth is, if you know you are not called up for
something don't do it. Simply because you see other people doing it and you feel
since that stuff attracts crowd and makes people like that person, you also
want to do it. Not everybody has the same gift, to be honest with you myself I
don't how I got the talent for dancing. But if you know you have the idea and
talent, all you to do is work more on yourself and never relent from chasing
your dream. The success might not be instantaneous, but with time you would get
there. Just never give up, cos winners never quit and quitters never win.
